Lincoln's Tragic Pragmatism

This is the opening lecture for the conference "The Political Thought of Abraham Lincoln." The conference on Lincoln's political thought is being hosted in conjunction with the exhibit, "Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War." The exhibit, which will be featured in Jereld R. Nicholson Library, April 2 - May 16, explores how Lincoln used the Constitution to confront three intertwined crises of the war - the secession of Southern states, slavery and wartime civil liberties. The exhibit was organized by the National Constitution Cener and the American Library Association Public Programs Office and made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. "Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War" is based on an exhibition of the same name developed by the National Constitution Center. The Conference, "The Political Thought of Abraham Lincoln," is sponsored by Linfield College Nicholson Library, the Office of Academic Affairs and the Frederick Douglass Forum on Law, Rights and Justice. This lecture features John D. Burt, the Paul E. Prosswimmer Professor of American Literature at Brandeis University. He has also published many books including, "Lincoln's Tragic Pragmatism."
