>> Hi. I'm Shahram Kordasti and I'm leading the SSC Module for Year 2. And today I'm going to discuss the components of this module, and the choices you have. SSC Module provides a very exciting opportunity for you to study a subject of your choice, in depth and complement your learning beyond the core curriculum, we have a wide choices for you, it aims to enrich your intellectual development, and provide you with new skills that you need for your career as a doctor. You will have two umbrellas to choose. One is language courses, that you can select a new language to learn, and the other one is non language projects that you have a list of projects with different aims and you get to choose one of those projects that some of them are clinical, some of them are not clinical, but relevant to clinical practice. The selection process will be open in October. They're to be confirmed. You must make 10 SSC selection, and you will be assigned to one SSC of your choice. In most cases, unfortunately, we cannot change it. And if you change, that may be disregarded and creates confusion. Obviously, for the language course is a different website, and we'll provide the link, you go there, you register for the language. But for different reason you may not be selected for the language you want to learn. Maybe the class is full or the level is not suitable for you. In that case, you need to come back and choose SSC selection on the second round. And for that, I would like to ask you to contact us, our management team, and let us know as soon as possible. Therefore, we can include you on the second round of choice and remove you from the language cohort because otherwise it will be considered that you are on the language course, and again, it may create some confusion. So I would like to stress that if you are not selected for any reason for the language course, let us know as soon as possible. These are the timeline to be confirmed. But currently, we are aiming during October to have the selection process open in place, and by Monday 31st of October it will be closed. On successful selection in the first round, there might be some issue with your selections which SSC is not very common. Usually is related to MLC, and other language centre return you to the non language SSC's, and that case you have another choice to select, and for the second round or if your choices are all full, again you have the second round of choices. In November, we will let you know, basically, which projects you are allocated to. And also, we will email you to confirm that you are allocated and you're aware of that. For the outcome, it's very much within the GMC. We got Medical practise guideline. I'm not going to read this learning outcome, please read it on your own time. We will put these slides in the KEATS page, and you can always read that. For clinically oriented projects, we have a specific learning outcomes that again are written here and we can refer to when you have time. The types of non language projects used to be based on these choices, clinical, bioscience, medical humanities, etc. Since new guidance by the school, we change this to what is the advantage of this project for your future to be a doctor as a researcher, doctor as a teacher, doctor as improver. So the projects will be allocated under these umbrellas, and each project might be within more than one of these umbrellas. That depends on what you want to do in the future. You may choose one of these and see what projects will be available. So slightly different categories of projects, but it won't change much difference for you. SSC Module is a 15 credit module, and you must pass components of stage 2. You will hear more or maybe you already heard about the assessments. I'm not going to go to too much details, but you will have 150 hours of study, including 12 timetable study days on Thursday between 18th of January to 25th of April, as I've mentioned here. It's flexible by the choice of your supervisor, but you need to have weekly contact and different types of contacts can be teaching, can be interactive presentations, etc, depends on the project. And more information are available on our KEATS page. The assessment briefly are two parts. One is 100% of written work as an essay, and the engagement which is just pass and fail. It doesn't have any numerical assessment. And the written components usually are 2000 words essay. Again, this is a choice will be decided by your supervisor, and the engagement component usually is based on attendance and active engagement. But please check the specific project you are choosing. You need to pass both components to pass the module, and no cross compensation. More details will be discussed and will be available through your KEATS. And the language assessment is slightly different. It's 60% written paper and 40% oral exam and dates to be confirmed. Project selection process for non language options is in place as I've mentioned, and you have 10 choices to make, and you cannot select language and non language options. Allocation are made by, in place. We don't have control over that, but it is not first come, first served. It's based on a combination of your choices, the ranking of it, and the available places. And all non language registration must take place as per the deadline. If you not choose within the deadline, unfortunately, we have to randomly allocate you to one of the remaining projects. So it's very important that you choose within the timeline as mentioned. To secure a place on language SSC will be the same time in October, but the link will be different and will be provided soon through the KEATS. If you are not beginner, they may ask you to complete an online level assessment to make sure you are on the right stage. If you're a beginner, there is no need and you can participate. Please be very clear about this when you register, whether you have any previous training or experience with that language, because that is important to allocate the right level for you. For the modern language options, it's quite different in terms of registration and management. Therefore, if you are selecting a language SSC, please be aware that the communication will be by email. Only King's email accounts will be recognised, and communicated with. And they cannot send email to private email. This is true for SSC project as well, and we only communicate, receive and send emails to KCL email addresses. If you have any specific question this year, they have a new email address. Languagecenterinternal@kcl.ac.uk, which is different from last year. And if you question regarding registration, you need to communicate with this email address. Once you are registered, and start your course, you need to communicate with your teacher directly regarding any question you may have. Please note that SSC Admin team at KCL cannot help you with MLC registration or anything after you started regarding your course. We don't have access to necessary information to help you with that. And you need to communicate with this email address as I've mentioned. The language courses for this year, we have mainly beginners and advanced beginner languages option Stage 1 and 2. And these are the choices which will be offered to you when you choose modern language. Regarding the SSC, you should remember that is 15 credit for the language courses, 16 student per class, and the written exam and oral exams of mentioned, written exam is in person and on-campus. And you have to attend 75% of classes to be eligible to participate in examination. Otherwise, unfortunately, you will not be considered for the assessments. So to summarise, student must select 10 choices for non language courses. If you are not successful, you go for the second round. The SSC page on KEATS will be available soon. With the non language courses is a mixture, depends on the projects, some of them completely on campus or some of them maybe a mixture on campus, and Microsoft team or Zoom for online teaching. It depends on the type of your course, but we encourage all the project leads to have the classes in person, in campus unless it is not possible, or there has to be some online elementary. If you have any query regarding your selection, these are the two email addresses for non language courses. MBBS Stage 2 is the main point of contact for you, and then Modern Language centre is this new email address as I've mentioned. Finally, I should mention about the stage 2 SSC prize of all the two Medical student each year for outstanding achievement. This is in memory of King's medical student Nicola, that every year we invite the top 5% marks students to apply for this. And more details will be on MBBS programme page. If you have any more questions, please feel free to drop us a line. I'm very happy to answer. I wish you a great day. I hope you enjoy your second year of study at King's. Thank you.
