Free Electrons!

What's an electron? Electrons are everywhere . . . so what's the problem of getting free ones? What can you do with a beam of electrons? Bill Mackie, professor emeritus of physics at Linfield College, delivers his "last lecture" to the college community, explaining basic physics, some history, and problems to free electrons. Mackie joined the Linfield faculty in 1987. He earned his bachelor's degree from Linfield College and his doctoral degree from the Oregon Graduate Center. In 1992, he was honored with the inaugural Samuel H. Graf Faculty Achievement Award at Linfield. In 2017, he was awarded the Lynwood W. Swanson Scientific Research Award from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust for "exemplary research in electron emission physics and technology, publishing 50 peer-reviewed articles, mentoring 150 Linfield College undergraduate research students, and establishing a successful company.”
